A Discussion of Snow, Rain, and Rain-On-Snow Loads For Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings

In promoting and strengthening the present pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal structure market, the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), has proved a very important organization. The MBMA was established in the United States in 1956, with just 13 members. It has consistently worked to bring the industry to where it is today. The aims of this group are to ensure industry agreement on insurance and safety regulations, building code applications, and architectural criterion.

The Metal Building Manufacturers Association works hard to present design advancements and protocols to manufacturers. Before the MBMA was established, metal building fabricators set their own architectural guidelines. This resulted in large quality and reliability differences within the building industry. The integrity of contemporary all-metal structures is due, in large part, to this organization’s planning protocols.

The MBMA had 30 metal building fabricators in its membership at the beginning of the 21st century, representing nearly 10,000 builders across the U.S. To strengthen information and policy content, metal building industry suppliers have recently been extended membership. Almost all all-metal building complexes that are built nationwide are a result of group member efforts.

Wind tunnel research carried out by the MBMA in the 1970s led to enhanced pre-engineered, pre-fabricated metal building wind protection which is still in use today. The MBMA continues its efforts in wind studies. Their research is used internationally as acknowledged ordinances for pre-engineered metal building setup. Fire rating, snow loading, and thermal studies measurements have also been encouraged and promoted by the Association’s actions.

The principles for proper high-grade metal building roof design, an annual industry economic analysis, and plenty of presentations, videos, and promotional materials that point out the benefits, advantages, and features of all-metal buildings are produced by the MBMA. An important informational tool for anyone concerned with the field is the guide book that the MBMA has published for over 50 years. This book is essential in its information regarding the aspects of efficient design, competent structural loads, and other necessary manufacturing practices and applications.

The MBMA offers approval programs for metal building producers. A recent course aimed to not only provide a high quality pre-engineered metal building through the fabrication process but also to emphasize correct design and quality procedures once the structure is finalized. Endorsement by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is required by the MBMA for enrollment in its organization.

Headquartered in Ohio, the Metal Building Manufacturers Association continues to be the most substantial and influential all-metal structure affiliation in the U.S.
